Admission Procedures:

Regular Student Admission

Students admitted as regular students are considered to be persons enrolled for the purpose of obtaining a degree, certificate, or other recognized credential offered by DCCC.

DCCC strongly recommends that students complete a GED or a high school diploma prior to attending full-time.

First Time Admission

Follow these steps to apply for first-time admission:

1.       Complete an application form and return it to the Office of Admissions.

2.       Have official transcripts or GED scores sent to the Office of Admissions. Transcripts should be sent directly from the school or college to the Office of Admissions.

a.       High school transcripts should include final grades and date of graduation. Students who have completed a degree at another college or university are not required to submit a high school transcript.

b.       College transcripts should be sent from each previous college attended. Students who have a bachelor's or higher degree and are not pursuing a degree at DCCC may disregard this requirement.

3.        A physical examination signed by a physician is required for all nursing, health information management and students participating in varsity athletics. (Varsity athletes are required to have a physical each year). Students should contact the specific department to obtain necessary forms.
The college does reserve the right to require a physical examination by a physician when a communicable disease is suspected and/or to restrict attendance in classes until a medical release is received. Students with (or carriers of) an infectious contagious communicable disease such as AIDS or ARC may wish to continue to engage in as many pursuits as the conditions allows. As long as students are able to meet performance standards and medical evidence indicates that the condition is not a threat to themselves or others, college staff will be sensitive to this condition and will ensure that the students will be treated in a manner as consistent as possible with other students. In each case involving students with a communicable disease, the Board of Trustees reserves the right to make a final decision regarding placement and education after reviewing the recommendations of a "health assessment" team and after considering the risks and benefits to the students and to others in the educational setting.

4.       Dodge City Community College requires all first time, full-time students to take an assessment exam prior to enrollment. The results are used for initial placement in English, reading, and math courses. In addition, part-time students are required to take the exam prior to taking their first English or math class. Currently, the college uses the ASSET exam for placement purposes; however, it reserves the right to change the placement instrument without notice.

5.       American College Test (ACT) scores are recommended for admission but not required.

Special Student Admission

         1.     High school juniors and seniors are eligible to enroll for credit courses provided they have obtained written authorization from their high school principal. In addition, such students must enroll in courses normally considered to be college freshman or sophomore level. They may not enroll in any course numbered 001 through 099.

2.       High school sophomores are eligible to enroll for credit courses provided that they have obtained written authorization from their high school principal and have already completed ten units of high school credit in a vocational program approved by the Kansas State Department of Education. Such students may enroll only in courses specifically designated as vocational or in courses which are required for graduation by the college vocational program in which they are enrolled.

3.       Students who are enrolled in a gifted program in a unified school district or other accredited school may obtain special student status provided they have obtained written authorization from the director of their gifted program and have submitted an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to the College which indicates that the student will benefit from a specific post-secondary education class.

4.       Students enrolled in a non-accredited private school who are in the equivalent of their junior or senior years of high school are eligible to enroll for credit courses. Such students must submit evidence of their academic status in the form of transcripts or assessment exams.

5.       Students enrolled in a non-accredited private school who are considered gifted and who have not yet completed a high school diploma or its equivalent are eligible to enroll for credit courses. Such students must demonstrate evidence of gifted status in any manner prescribed by the Kansas State Department of Education.

6.       Students who have already earned a bachelor's or higher degree and who are not pursuing a degree at DCCC are admitted as special students. In order for the College to determine appropriate placement, such students must complete the ASSET exam in conjunction with their first full-time enrollment or in conjunction with their first enrollment in an English or Math class.

7.       Students who enroll in courses for customized business and industry training are not required to take the ASSET exam. Otherwise, they must meet applicable admissions polices as defined above.

The policies described above apply equally to all courses taken for credit or on an audit basis. They also apply equally to courses taken through a traditional or non-traditional delivery system.

The College reserves the right to deny admission or re-admission to any individual determined by the Dean of Student Services to be a threat to the college community.

Non-Accredited Private School Students

Students who have graduated from a non-accredited private school will be admitted under the same provisions and regulations that apply to any other regularly admitted student. Such students must submit evidence of their academic status in the form of a diploma, transcripts or assessment exams. They are strongly encouraged to complete the TABE, the ACT, the SAT, or a similar exam which will aid the College with initial assessment. In order for the College to determine appropriate placement, such students must complete the ASSET exam prior to enrolling in classes.

Non-Traditional Studies

This approach to education recognizes the realities of adult life: time and place constraints, personal and professional responsibilities, and the need for career-related learning.

In Non-Traditional Studies, students may enroll at any time during the year and work under the supervision of an instructor at a comfortable rate and time. Examinations and conferences with the instructor can be scheduled to suit the student's needs. Students are subject to all of the policies described in the section of this catalog titled "Admissions Procedures."

Transfer Students

Students transferring to DCCC from another post-secondary institution are required to follow the same admission procedures stated for admission of first-time students. Students on academic probation from another institution may be accepted on probation at DCCC.

To qualify for any degree, students must earn their last twelve hours of credit at DCCC.

International Student Admission

International students who are applying for an I-20 from Dodge City Community College in order to obtain a student F-1 visa must meet all college admission policies. In addition, they must submit to the Director of Admissions the completed application and all requested supporting documents, including but not limited to: a valid TOEFL score and verification of ability to pay tuition, fees, and other supporting costs.

Residency Requirements

Kansas law requires individuals to live in the state of Kansas six months prior to the first day of the semester or session to be eligible for resident tuition rates. Address changes that result in a change in Kansas residency may require validation through a residency verification form. Contact the Office of Admissions for details.
