DODGE CITY — The Dodge City Community College volleyball team had two of its members selected to the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Conference squad.
Dodge City native Emily Scheck was placed on the first-team roster, while middle hitter Sherri Darden was tabbed to the second team.
Darden had a very solid year for the Lady Conqs, finishing number eight in the nation in hitting percentage (48 percent) and number five in the nation in blocks per game (1.29).
Scheck returned to her hometown after beginning her collegiate volleyball career in Garden City, deciding to come back to Dodge to finish out her community college career.
With all of the attention generated by a successful Conquistador volleyball team this season, a group was formed under the direction of USA Volleyball that is aimed at improving and promoting volleyball in the Dodge area.
DC3 head coach Stephano Anthemides, who has an extensive background coaching for the USA Volleyball organization, has decided to form a volleyball club for area youth who are interested in competing at the club level.
Age groups for the club teams include 11-14 and 15-18 as two separate squads.
"The main goals are to increase the level of competition in the area and to promote the game of volleyball," Anthemides said.
Tryouts for the two club squads will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday for the distinct age groups.
The tryouts will be located at the Dodge City Community College gymnasium. For more information about the tryouts, time and cost, contact Anthemides at (316) 993-1900 or Glenda Smith at (620) 381-1690.
In order to participate in any tryout, the young athlete will need to be a registered member of Heart of America Volleyball, which can be found at www.hoavb.org.
