Conq Football Season Preview

Aug 23, 2012

Football Season Outlook

Head Coach Bob Majeski is excited about his 5th season at the helm of Dodge City football.  The 2012 team is returning a core nucleus of sophomores that will lead a talented group of incoming freshman.  Majeski believes the program is moving in the right direction, “We believe we are better than we were last year, we are excited and looking forward to getting things started.”  With another grueling Jayhawk Conference schedule, Majeski and his coaching staff understand that you never know what might happen.  “Top to bottom the Jayhawk, it is the most competitive it has been in a while, we know everyone is going to be better, and we are excited to continue to move forward in the right direction.”

Dodge City will have a new face under center this fall.  With the departure of Bryan Parnes, the Conqs will have a 4 man race for snaps this fall.  Sophomore Logan Singhisen (Holcomb, KS) returns after seeing time at Wide Receiver last year.   Singhisen, freshmen Jason Stewart (Washington D.C.), Thomas Keith (Manassas, GA) and Cole Sjeklocha (Sublette, KS) will battle it out for time at quarterback.

Running Back

Sophomore Larry Wahls (Pine Bluff, AR) and Butler County CC transfer Jace Banner (Dodge City, KS) will lead a young group of running backs this year.  The Conqs will be inexperienced at running back but believe that are very talented.

Wide Receivers

Sophomores Garrison Hendricks (Montezuma, KS) and Ervin Swonger (Ashland, KS) return after gaining valuable experience last year.  Freshmen Mark Smith (Rossville, KS), Chad Bennett (Sterling, KS) and Shawn Knighton (Lawrence, KS) will add depth to the receiver position.

Offensive Line

Bryson McCluskey (Murfreesboro, TN) returns and will be look upon as the vocal leader for Dodge City.  McCluskey and sophomore Daniel Lambert (Kiowa, KS) will stabilize the offensive line.  Freshmen Josh Hatfield (Salina, KS), Marcos Gutierrez (Dodge City, KS), Terrell Battle (Macon, GA), Jerald Callahan (Ashland, KS), Brock Demorat (Bucklin, KS), Cortez Jones (Wichita, KS), and Zach Fields (Cimarron, KS) will provide depth and battle for snaps this year.

Defensive Line

Highly touted Defensive End Marcus Hardison (Punta Gorda, FL) returns after a great freshman season.  Hardison, along with sophomore DT Elbert Fulgham (New Orleans, LA) will continue to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Sophomore transfer Bruce Campbell (Dodge City, KS) will provide an immediate impact. In-state freshmen James Kilian (Goddard, KS), John Verbeck (Great Bend, KS) and Joem Edger (Wichita, KS) will add athleticism and depth.

Dodge City returns a very experienced and explosive core at the Linebacker position.  Sophomores Jeremy Springer (Villa Rica, GA) and John Goetz (Wichita, KS) return after playing in every game last season.  Garden City CC transfer Alex Schmitt will add depth to a strong group of Linebackers.  Dodge City HS grads Todd Middleton and Rodney Rujos will both look to push for immediate playing time.

Defensive Backs

In the defensive backfield, Dodge City only returns one player with college experience.  DeShawn Smith (Smryna, TN) will lead a young group in the secondary.  RS-FR. Deontae Battle (Nashville, TN) and true freshman Wonderful Terry (Fort Pierce, FL) will help at the cornerback position.  Three freshmen will battle it out for the safety spots, Ross Coomes (Phillipsburg, KS), whose older brother was a starter for last year’s team, Tyrone Wright (Wichita, KS) and Josh Long (Buhler, KS) will all push for playing time.

Special Teams

Freshman Austin Avelar (Goodland, KS) will provide consistency in the kicking game for the Conqs this season, an area where Dodge City struggled last year.

Kick Returners

Recently mentioned Larry Wahls and DeShawn Smith, along with Cole Struckoff (Kensington, KS) will continue to add athleticism and explosiveness to the return game.
