The Conq track and field team had great success over the weekend at the Highland Scottie Classic Indoor Track & Field Meet, Highland Community College. Participating teams included Highland, Haskell, Coffeyville, Dodge City, Butler, Pratt and Benedictine. Freshman and Dodge City natives Vanessa Delacruz (3000 meter run with a time of 12.17) and Vicente Estrella (800 meter run with a time of 1:57.74) both captured first place titles with Vincente also qualifying for the NJCAA National meet March 1 and 2 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Delacruz and Estrella weren’t the only athletes who captured first as sophomore Dodge City native Dashonda Johnson won with a national qualifying time of 8.48 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles and Raymundo Garcia (Sophomore from Moscow Kansas) winning the 1000 meter run with a time 2:46. An unexpected yet very exciting first place finish came from the mens’ 4X400 meter relay ran by Eric Klotz, Raymundo Garcia, Jerry Isakson, and Vicente Estrella. Darvell Harris (freshman from Chicago Illinois) placed second in the 55 meter dash yet still managed to qualify for nationals with a time of 6.51. Other notable performances include a second place finish by freshman Sydney Hudson in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:25, third place finish by freshman Martavia Corley in the 55 meter run with a time of 7.43 only .1 seconds off the National qualifying standard who also placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash, and sophomore Cory English (Colorado) with a second place finish in the 800 meter dash.
