DC3 Baseball Splits Conference Opener

Mar 05, 2013
Due to field conditions, the DC Baseball team opened up their Jayhawk West opener in Oklahoma City rather than Hutchinson.  It was a series of back and forth baseball, with both teams winning 2 games of the 4 game set.

In game 1, The Conqs (8-6, 2-2) jumped out to a 2-0 in the 1st inning, but quickly saw the lead erased after a 3 run home run from Hutch (3-3, 2-2) in the bottom half of the inning. DC struck back with 2 more runs in the 2nd inning to take a 4-3 lead.  After good pitching from both sides, DC added 2 insurance runs in the top of the 7th on a 2 run home run from Shay Lynes to lead 6-3.  The Conqs gave up a run in the bottom half, but held on for a 6-4 win.  Ross Vance settled in after the 1st inning and pitched a complete game for the victory.

Hutch came out very aggressive in game 2 and built a 6-1 lead after 4 innings.  The Conqs struggled with runners on base and could not come up with the timely hit to get back in the game.  Hutch added on 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to win 9-1.  Spencer Bedwell took the loss on the mound for DC, Haden Houska was 3-5 with a triple and Nick Comito went 2-5 in a losing effort.

Game 3 was a pitchers duel from the very beginning.  Dodge City's Jagger Harjo and Hutch's Christian Cox shut down the opposing hitters throughout the game.  Hutch was able to take a 1-0 in the 2nd inning but that is all they would get for a while. Harjo, went 6 innings, gave up 1 run on only 4 hits.  DC headed into the 7th inning still trailing 1-0.  After a lead off double by Shay Lynes, the Conqs tied it up with a 1 out single from Conner Koepp to score Lynes.  Travis Leverett came on and shut down Hutch in the bottom half to send the game into extra innings.  After DC was unable to score in the top of the 8th, Hutch was able to score a run off of Leverett with 2 outs to win 2-1.

Game 4 was much of the same, as both teams pitched extremely well.  The Conqs pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 2nd.  Scott Hillier led of the inning with a double and Jarren Donato followed with a single to score Hillier.  After Lynes was hit by pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd, Jerry Lacayo drove Donato in with a single.  2 runs was plenty for starting pitcher Walker Rainwater, as he shut down the Hutch offense for 5 innings, giving up only 1 run and scattered 7 hits.  Sam Brunner pitched the final 2 innings and struck out 4 for his 2nd save of the season.

The Conqs are scheduled to get back on the field Wednesday March 6th at home against Hesston College.  DC will then host Pratt CC this weekend for their home conference opener.
