The DCCC Football team took on No. 5 ranked Butler Community College Saturday in their first official game headed by Coach Gary Thomas and his new staff. The Conqs held Butler for the first half going into halftime 0-0. They brought solid defense to the BG Products Veterans Stadium and prevented Butler from scoring until the second half.
William French scored the Conqs’ only touchdown on a 33 yard interception from Deondre Ford. It looked as though Dodge was ready to answer the Grizzlies, but Butler lived up to its reputation in the second half. Dodge City lost to Butler 41-6.
Individually, Deondre Ford was 13-21 passing for 113 yards. Dodge got 38 yards rushing on 14 carries from Tyreis Thomas. William French went 4 for 49 yards receiving. Danzel McDaniel had 7 tackles and Ted Taylor brought 6.
Coach Thomas said "I think we did some things on Saturday that we can definitely build upon. We showed flashes of being a good football team in all three phases of the game, but we also made about six crucial mistakes that bad football teams make that decided the outcome of the game. We need to work to be fundamentally sound in our technique and scheme on a daily basis. We are a very talented football team and when we can minimize our mistakes and play consistent, we will be tough to beat."
The Conqs are 0-1 for the season and 0-1 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Conqs will play host at home for a non-conference game against Kilgore College on Saturday August 31 at 1:00.
