Conqs beat #11 ranked Hutch
Sep 16, 2013
The Conquistador football team defeated the #11 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Saturday in an overtime thriller. The Conqs came out strong and were up 20-6 before the Blue Dragons gained control and scored 21 unanswered points. Htuch was in position to build a 2 touchdown lead in the fourth quarter. However, turnovers were the story of the day for the Blue Dragons with 4 on the day including a fumble with 12:15 remaining in the game. The Conqs tied up the game on the ensuing drive and held the Blue Dragon offense for their next drive. With 3:30 remaining in the game, the Conqs started their go-ahead scoring drive behind sophomore running back Tyreis Thomas, who had 37-yard and 10-yard carries on the drive. Freshman quarterback Deondre Ford connected with freshman Charlie Wilson for a 16-yard touchdown pass with :39 seconds remaining. The Blue Dragons would not go down without a fight and, after an unsportsmanlike penalty by the Conqs, started their drive at the Conq 40-yard line. The Blue Dragons marched the rest of the way down the field and tied the score with just :05 seconds remaining in regulation. On the second play of Hutch's overtime possession, Hutch quarterback Luke Barnes fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Conqs. The Conqs took over and after two incomplete passes, Ford connected with freshman William French for a 24-yard gain. One play and one yard later, Thomas struck again, with his second touchdown carry of the day and handing the Blue Dragons their second loss of the season. On top of the two touchdowns, Thomas ended the day with 25 carries and 124 yards. Ford was 18 for 36 with 272 yards and 2 touchdowns. French had 8 catches, 125 yards and 1 touchdown. The Conqs had 425 yards of total offense compared to the Blue Dragons 372. The Conqs (2-1, 3-1) will be in action this week at home against Fort Scott. Game time will be 1pm at Memorial Stadium.
