Conqs Survive Hounds

The 17th ranked Conq football team was sorely tested by the Fort Scott Greyhounds on Saturday. Both teams had a relatively quiet first quarter, but the Hounds came out pumped for the second quarter and scored the first points of the game. Devonte Robinson answered with a 63 yard run, however, the PAT failed and the Conqs were a point down, 7-6. The Hounds then went on a 22-6 run that was ended with a Keymonne Gabriel touchdown, making the score 22-12. The 2-point PAT failed and the Hounds scored again to make it 29-12. Tyreis Thomas ended the half with a 39-yard run - this time the PAT was made. The Conqs were down 29-19 at the half. The third quarter started with the Conqs defense making the first strike when Adrian Burton intercepted Fort Scott quarterback Jason Stewart for a pick-6. The PAT struggles continued however, leaving the Conqs down 29-25. Thomas made the second strike with a short TD run, giving the Conqs the first lead of the game 31-29 at 8:48 in the third quarter. Fort Scott answered at the end of the third quarter going up 36-31. With the fourth quarter came Thomas once again with 6:49 remaining in the game. The 2-point PAT failed, leaving the Conqs with a 37-36 lead. The Conq defense dug in and kept the Hounds out of the end zone to give the Conqs the victory. Thomas ended the day with 166 yards and 3 touchdowns. Robinson had 86 yards in rushing, 84 yards in receiving and 1 touchdown. Conq quarterback Deondre Ford was 19-35 with 213 yards and 3 interceptions. The Conqs (3-1, 4-1) travel to Independence on Saturday.
