The Dodge City Conquistadors couldn't get on track Saturday night in an 88-59 setback to the Seward County Saints in Jayhawk West action at United Wireless Arena.
The Conquistadors shot 21-of-50 from the field (1-of-17 from three-point range), but had one field goal during an eight-minute stretch at the end of the first half and start of the second stanza. The Saints, meanwhile, went through the Dodge City defense in making 33 of their 55 shots to record the league win.
"I thought (Seward) played harder and that's one thing I can't figure out (is) what's went wrong with this team in regards to effort from the first semester to this," said Dodge City head coach Kyle Campbell. "It's probably my fault because I gave them too much lee-way when we were playing well and I should have stayed on them. I have been on them, but I guess I should have pushed on them more.
"We have three regular season games left and we're not going to quit. We're going to find guys who want to play hard and finish out the season and make a little run. We've got a long way to go."
E.J. Eaves scored 20 points (16 in the first half) and Ameer Jackson added 18 (14 in the second half) to lead Dodge City (14-13, 3-8 Jayhawk West).
Five players scored double digits for Seward (19-8, 9-2) with Niem Stevenson leading the way with 23 points. Brian Bridgeforth and Quentin Purtue added 14 apiece and Secean Johnson and Raoul Mentor scored 10.
The two teams were even at 11 as they completed five minutes of play before Seward County used an eight-point run to take the lead for good. The Saints pushed the lead to 10 before a run by the Conqs cut the margin to 29-25 with four minutes left in the first half. Seward closed out the half with an 11-2 run to lead 40-27 at halftime.
The Saints shot 16-of-28 before intermission, while Dodge City made only 10 of their 26 shots with Eaves going 6-of-8 from the field.
Seward extended the lead to 19 as the Conqs didn't make a field goal for the first 3 1/2 minutes of the second half. Dodge City never got closer than 15 points the rest of the game. The Saints shot even better in the second half (17-of-27) to complete the rout.
The Conqs' next contest is a road battle Wednesday night at Colby. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
