COLBY, Kan. – The Dodge City Community College baseball team suffered a pair of heart-wrenching defeats at Colby Community College, 7-6 and 10-9, Saturday afternoon in Jayhawk Conference action at the Trojan Baseball Field.
In game two of the doubleheader DC3 led 8-7 after six complete innings, however, CCC (10-11, 4-6 Jayhawk Conference) pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-8 lead.
The Conquistadors tied it at 9-9 in the top of the eight when Conner Koepp (Norman, Okla. /Norman HS) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Hayden Simmons (Wodfforth, Texas/Frenship HS).
CCC’s Grant Buchanan brought home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the win.
Luke Crabb (Independence, Mo. /Fort Osage HS) was tagged with the loss – despite not allowing an earned run. He tossed 2 ¾ innings and allowed four hits, three runs (all unearned) and no walks and struck out two.
Leno Ramirez (Dover, Okla./Dover HS) finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, Jerry Lacayo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) batted 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs and Koepp went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
The Conqs were out-hit 17-9 and committed five errors.
In the first game of the doubleheader, CCC led 6-3 after fifth innings. DC3 got its bats rolling in the sixth innings. Lacayo and Simmons hit back-to-back solo homeruns to bring the Conqs within one. However, that’s as close as DC3 would come and Trojans put the locks down to close out the win.
Andrew Riddell (Nsw, Australia/Oakhill College) absorbed the loss for the Conqs. He tossed four innings and allowed five hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks and struck out three.
Lacayo finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
DC3 (15-7, 5-5 Jayhawk Conference) returns to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at CCC.
