DC3 Fights Past FSCC, 10-7 and 6-1

Mar 15, 2014
DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City Community College softball team got back to its winning ways with a pair of wins over Fort Scott Community College, 10-7 and 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Jayhawk Conference action at Legends Park.

“It was great to get these wins,” DC3 coach Howie Smith said. “We have shown at times that we are a pretty good softball team. Overall, two good wins and we have to build upon this as we continue into region and conference play.”

In game one of the twin bill, it was a five-run first inning that put the Conquistadors in control.

Melanie Maes (Parker, Colo. /Ponderosa HS) opened the game by reaching on an error and Ashley Stephenson (Dodge City, Kan. /Dodge City HS) walked to put runners at first and second with no outs.

The next batter, Courtney Rettig (Fresno, Calif. /Clovis North HS) singled down the left field line to load the bases. This brought up Lindsey Karlin (Berthoud, Colo. /Berthoud HS) who hit a frozen rope to second base and was credited with the RBI. Stephenson then scored on a wild pitch to give the Conqs a 2-0 advantage.

DC3 added three more runs and seized momentum.

However, FSCC (2-19, 2-19 Jayhawk Conference) added four runs in its part of the second cut the lead to within one.

DC3 responded immediately with two runs in its half of the inning. Maes opened play with a single to left field and Rettig brought her home with a double down the right field line. Rettig then scored on a passed ball to make it 7-4.

The Conqs continued its offensive explosion in the bottom of the third when Rettig hit a 2-run homerun to center field and DC3 led 10-4.

Lauren Kelly (Newcastle, Okla. /Newcastle HS) earned the win. In 6 1/3 innings of duty she allowed 13 hits, seven runs (six earned) and one walk and struck out one.
Rettig finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

In game two of the doubleheader DC3 received a superb outing from Jordan Mecham (Winnemucca, Nev. /Albert M. Lowery HS).

She threw a complete game six-hitter, allowed one run and two walks and struck out 11.

“Jordan threw a great game,” Smith said. “She was in control throughout and did a fantastic job.”

Ashley Beavers (Longmont, Colo. /Silver Creek HS), Elizabeth Acosta (Lafayette, Colo. /Centaurus HS), Danielle Aldana (Cheyenne, Wyo. /Cheyenne Central HS), Karlin and Stephenson each recorded an RBI.

DC3 returns to action March 18 at Independence Community College for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
