DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City softball team played close to the edge, but didn’t slip, and swept a pair of one-run games, 10-9 and 9-8, over Hutchinson Tuesday afternoon in Jayhawk Conference action at Legends Park.
In the opener the Lady Conqs (14-12, 10-8 Jayhawk Conference) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and looked poised to run away with the win.
However, the Blue Dragons added two runs in the fifth, three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh and led 9-7 after seven and a half innings.
Just when Hutch seemed destined to secure the win, the Lady Conqs proved otherwise.
Mackenzie Maes (Parker, Colo. /Ponderosa HS) and Elizabeth Acosta (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus HS) opened the bottom of the seventh with a pair of base hits, which put runners at first and third with no outs.
Maes then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to within one.
The next batter Danielle Aldana (Cheyenne, Wyo. /Cheyenne Central HS) then reached on a fielder’s choice.
Courtney Rettig reached because of an error on the shortstop, which put the tying run on third base – and it didn’t take long for DC3 to tie it.
Ashley Stephenson (Dodge City, Kan. /Dodge City HS), who pitch-ran for Acosta, scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 9-all.
The next batter, Kaitlyn Amaral (Las Vegas, Nev. /Silverado HS) hit a blooper to left field, which was dropped and brought home the pitch-runner, Tori Hatzenbuehler (Superior, Neb. /Superior HS), to clinch the win.
Amaral finished 1 for 4 with 4 RBIs, while Lindsey Karlin (Berthoud, Colo. / Berthoud HS) went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
In game two of the double-dip, DC3 opened up an early 7-2 lead, which extended to a 9-2 lead after four complete innings.
Hutch (8-14, 7-9 Jayhawk Conference) rallied to cut the lead to within one, but the Lady Conqs stood tall and closed out the win.
Karlin went 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs and Rettig finished 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs.
The Lady Conqs return to the diamond March 29 at Seward County for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
