DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City baseball team split a doubleheader with Barton County Saturday afternoon at Cavalier Field.
DC3 dropped the series opener 6-4, but rallied back and downed Cougars in game two 14-4.
The Conqs improved to 24-14 overall, 12-10 in Region VI and Jayhawk Conference standings.
In game two the Cougars (21-16, 8-10 Region VI, 8-10 Jayhawk Conference) pushed across a run in the first inning and led early, however, the Conqs’ offense responded in a big way and exploded for five runs in the second inning.
Jerry Lacayo (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Cheyanne Mountain HS) and Damion Orr (Midwest City, Okla. /Midwest City HS) each hit RBI singles to open the scoring. Haden Houska (Enid, Okla. /Enid HS) reached base on a fielder’s choice and was credited with an RBI. Houska later scored on a passed ball and the Conqs led 5-1 after two complete.
DC3 matched its second inning with a five-run sixth inning.
Josh Williams (Toronto, Ont. /W.A. Porter C.I.) and Parker Jones (The Colony, Texas/The Colony HS) each recorded a pair of RBIs.
Andrew Riddell (Nsw, Australia/Oakhill College) earned the win. He tossed a complete game and allowed seven hits, seven runs (four earned) and one walk and struck out seven batters.
In game one Barton County added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth inning and held off the Conqs late.
Jones went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Sam Brunner (Fort Collins, Colo. /Fort Collins HS) absorbed the loss. He tossed six innings, allowed four hits, six runs (four earned) and two walks and struck out seven batters.
The two teams complete return to the diamond Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
