Gold Tops Purple 21-7 in Spring Game

by Dennis Driscoll | May 03, 2014

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City Gold defeated the Dodge City Purple 21-7 at the 2nd Annual Purple and Gold Scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

“We got a lot of great work in today and it was important to put the teams in different pressure situations,” said head coach Gary Thomas, who begins his second year at the helm. “When we put them into games we want them to have already played under pressure, but that’s hard to duplicate. I think we did a pretty good job of that today.”

The Gold responded well to the pressure and scored first.

Quarterback Andy Baca led an 11-play drive that resulted in a five-yard touchdown pass to Christian Booker.

As the second quarter started, the Purple defense quickly found its retribution.

Baca completed a pass to William French, but Bobby Dexter forced a fumble and Mike Randle returned it 27 yards and into Gold territory.

Quarterback Deondre Ford then led a 10-play drive the culminated with a seven-yard touchdown strike to Ricky Gutierrez and at halftime the game was tied at 7-7.

Moments into the third quarter Linebacker Jason Smith jumped in front of a Ford pass and it didn’t take long – just one play – for the Gold offense to take advantage.

Baca found Booker on a quick slant and he did the rest on the way to a 58-yard touchdown.

Keymonne Gabriel scored from five yards out late in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

The Gold finished with 201 yards and held the Purple to 87 yards of total offense.

Baca completed 11-of-16 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Gabriel rushed nine times for 46 yards and averaged a game-high 5.1 yards per carry.

Booker hauled in six passes for 95 yards and touchdown.

Ford connected on eight passes for 63 yards for a touchdown and an interception.

Gutierrez grabbed three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown and James Bynes hauled in two receptions for 27 yards.

The Purple’s Elijah Battle recorded a game-high 5.5 tackles.

The Conquistadors opener is Aug. 30 against Ellsworth (Iowa). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
