Bertram Caruthers III, who goes by "Buzzy", coached High School Basketball and Grassroots/AAU Basketball for 7 years. His coaching career started at Barstow School in Kansas City, Missouri. under Coach Jeff Boschee, where he held a key role in turning around the Varsity program, helping lead them to the most victories in a Barstow Basketball season with 23 wins. In his 4th and final year at Barstow, Coach Caruthers finished as an assistant under incoming coach Billy Thomas.
From there he returned to his alma mater Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in Kansas City, Kansas. There he was an assistant coach under two time state champion and coach of the year Danny Parra. As a player at Sumner Academy he was a part of the Kansas Class 4A State Championship Team in 2000, under then head coach Randy Springs.
Coach Caruthers remains a coach for one of the best Nike Grassroots Programs in the nation, Mokan Elite. Mokan Elite is 1 of only 40 teams nationwide that is sponsored by Nike. Mokan Elite participates in Nike's EYBL(Elite Youth Basketball League). In the EYBL Mokan Elite competes at the highest level amongst 80% of the nations ranked players. In 2012, Coach Caruthers was instrumental in helping Mokan Elite qualify for Nike's Coveted Peach Jam Tournament, where they went to the Final Four. He has a major role in the players skill development, heading all team and individual workouts for the program. Coach Caruthers also recruits and identifies players that fit MOKAN basketball mission and philosophy. Coach Caruthers other duties include scouting, videotaping, and evaluating film for skills enhancement on a continuum.
Coach Caruthers truly prides himself in is his skill development work. He has provided countless hours of individual skill instruction and workouts to many youth and elite players. In the off-season Coach Caruthers personally trains several professional and college players. That list would include Alec Burks(Utah Jazz), Kyle Weems(Telekom Baskets Bonn, Germany), Dominique Morrison(Ilysiakos B.C. Greece), Willie Reed(Memphis Grizzlies), Willie Cauley(Kentucky), Will Spradling(K-State), and Shavon Shields(Nebraska).
At Dodge City, Coach Caruthers has used his knowledge and skills to provide the best for the program. He spends countless hours on the road recruiting across the nation, identifying players that fit Dodge City's philosophy and expectations. He prepares in-depth scouting reports for games throughout the season, evaluating film and being efficient with the opponents personnel. He loves being on the floor developing the players in the program and providing them with the knowledge, self-discipline, and hard work it takes to play at the next level.
