Softball Splits at Hesston

Apr 02, 2014
HESSTON, Kan. – The Dodge City softball team split a doubleheader at Hesston College Tuesday afternoon in NJCAA Region VI action.

The Lady Conqs won the opener 11-6 and dropped the nightcap, 7-6.

In game one the Hesston offense scored early and led 6-1 after four complete innings.

Just when Hesston (10-14, 8-12 Region VI) looked like it was about to run away with the game the DC3 offense came to life.

Courtney Rettig’s 2-run homerun and a Chantel Prester RBI double keyed a five-run fifth inning.

The DC3 (16-16, 11-9 Region VI) offense continued its fury in the sixth inning.

Kaitlyn Amaral hit an RBI double and Linday Karlin recorded an RBI single en route to a five-run sixth inning.

“We finally started to hit the ball where it was pitched,” DC3 coach Howie Smith said. “The first four inning we tried to pull everything and were reaching for the outside pitch. We made the adjustments and went through our progressions.”

Rettig finished 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and Amaral went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs.

Jordan Mecham earned the win. She tossed a complete game and allowed seven hits, six runs (three earned) and one walk and struck out seven batters.

In the series finale the Lady Conqs committed five errors and could never get on track.

Trailing 7-3 in the top of the seventh, Karlin drilled a 3-run homerun to cut the deficit to within one. However, that was a close as DC3 would come and Hesston closed out the game.

“We just had too many errors and it’s hard to win when you make that many mistakes,” Smith said. “All of Hesston's runs were unearned and that’s frustrating.”

Lauren Kelly absorbed the loss. She threw a complete game and allowed 13 hits, seven runs (none earned) and no walks.
