Take 2: Lady Conqs Sweep Red Devils

Apr 05, 2014

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City softball team extended its winning streak to four in a row and dispatched Allen County, 13-5 and 7-6, in a Saturday doubleheader on Legends Park.

The Lady Conqs improved to 20-16 overall, 15-9 in Region VI standings and 12-8 in Jayhawk Conference standings.

“Our goal was 15 wins because usually that’s enough to host a home playoff game,” DC3 coach Howie Smith said. “It looks that we’ll need at least 18 wins to earn that opportunity this year. We have six games left and I like our odds.”

In the series opener the Lady Conqs quickly put the game out of reach. DC3 pushed across two runs in the first, one run in the second, two runs in the third and four in the fourth and led 8-0 after four-complete innings.

The Red Devils (1-31, 0-24 Region VI, 0-20 Jayhawk Conference) responded with four of their own in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit in half. However, the Lady Conqs added three more in the fifth and six innings and the game was called due to the mercy rule.

Kaitlyn Amaral (Las Vegas, Nev. /Silverado HS) finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a homerun. Mackenzie Maes (Parker, Colo. /Ponderosa HS) and Chantel Prester (Russell, Kan. /Russell HS) each added a pair of RBIs.

Jordan Mecham (Winnemucca, Nev. /Albert M. Lowery HS) earned the win. She tossed a complete-game and scattered six hits, allowed five runs (two earned) and one walk and fanned four batters.

In the second game of the double-dip, DC3 pounded out 10 hits, and benefited from six errors and squeaked out the 7-6 victory.

Allen County plated one run in the first inning, but DC3 responded with three runs of its own—highlighted by Megan Flynn’s (Milliken, Colo. /Roosevelt HS) RBI single.

Allen County responded with a four-run third inning and took a 5-3 lead, however, The Lady Conqs pushed across three runs in their past of the fourth and fought back a late Red Devil rally to close out the win.

Maes finished 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Lauren Kelly (Newcastle, Okla. /Newcastle HS) earned the win. She tossed a complete game and allowed 13 hits, six runs (five earned) and no walks and struck out two batters.
