Howie Smith begins his 24th season as the Head Softball Coach at Dodge City Community College. His record stands at 552 wins and 505 losses, which includes three (3) conference championships (1991, 1999, 2003), two (2) Region VI championships (2000, 2002), one (1) West Sub-Regional Championship (2004), three (3) conference runner-up championships (1994, 1998, 2005), two (2) Region VI runner-up finishes (1997, 1998) and two trips to the NJCAA Softball World Series (2000, 2002) which included a 4th place finish at the 2000 World Series held in Kissimmee Florida.
Smith was named KJCCC Coach of the Year in the Western Division in 1997, 2003 and 2012, and in 2000, Smith and his assistant were named NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) West Region Coaching Staff of the Year, and a finalist for the National Coach of the Year.
Coach Smith is the Chairperson for the NFCA Junior College Lead-Off Softball Classic that is held every three years and has held that position for the past 11 years.
Smith was also named one of three coaches to coach the NJCAA USA All-Star Team in July 2013 in the prestigious Canadian Cup which is held in Surrey British Columbia Canada.
After graduating from Bethany College, Smith went back home and coached football and wrestling at Hoisington High School, and then in 1985 took the Assistant Softball Coach Position at DCCC.
While at DCCC, Smith has had 80 players receive All-Conference Recognition, 45 players receive All-Region VI honors, and 8 eight players receive All-American recognition. At the 2000 World Series, DCCC had one player named to the All-Tournament team. The softball program has also produced 30 NJCAA Academic All-Americans.
Smith has one daughter, Chantel who is a sophomore at Kansas Newman University.
