    2013 Cross Country Season Outlook

The Conquistador Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams are looking to make their mark this year in the Jayhawk Conference.  “We have added several key players to the teams this year,” commented Coach Smith, “and we are looking forward to a successful year.”

The Lady Conqs are in full swing with a young team.  “We are very blessed with the leadership of our returning sophomores, yet it is our freshman group this year that is expected to take the lead in terms of faster course times”, said Coach Smith.  “We are expecting great things from three key freshman including Sierra Soliz, League City, TX, Bianca Loza, Doraville, GA, and Savannah Williams, Hayden CO.  We expect these girls to make their mark in the Jayhawk Conference”.  Also joining the freshman squad are Antonique Atwood, Country Club Hills, IL, Alyssa Childress Fr Haslet, TX, and Tera McVicker, Grand Island, NE. The sophomores for the Lady Conqs include returners Ruth Palacios and Vanessa De La Cruz both Dodge City natives as well as transfer Jo Ann Weddington, Country Club Hills, IL. While not new to the Conq Track and Field program sophomore Sydney Hudson from Littleton, Co will also be joining the cross country family as well.  “We are looking for Vanessa and Sydney to be key components in placing in the top three and possibly winning the Jayhawk West conference title. They might not have the fastest times on the team yet it is often that fourth, fifth and sixth runner who make or break the teams placement in the race.  I can’t wait to see what is in store for these young ladies,” commented Smith.

The men’s team will be adding some young talent as well.  “We are excited to see what Anthony LaTour will bring to the table. He is one of those runners who was a little above average in High School, yet we expect to not only continue to grow as an athlete, but to also make his mark in the Jayhawk West conference,” commented Smith. Also joining LaTour on the men’s team are sophomores Jerry Isakson and Eric Klotz as well as freshmen: Austin Koehn, Montezuma, KS; Dalton Bray, Lamar CO; Deibert Rendon, Dodge City, KS; and Efrain Estrada, Fowler, KS.

While still on the short side as far as numbers are concerned, the anticipation of a successful season   continues to build as Assistant Track and Field Coach Melanie Smith, also a Dodge City High School graduate has joined Ballard to help lead the Cross Country program to a new level.  While new to the Cross Country program, Coach Smith is in her second season at Dodge City Community College after coaching Track and Field last spring.
