Usually when a team scores over 90 points and wins by a double-digit margin, then it was a good game for that squad.
But the Dodge City Lady Conquistadors had times when they were just too relaxed in their 95-77 victory over the Tabor junior varsity that concerned head coach Mark James.
"We're not very happy with this win," James said. "We told the kids after the game -- and we really mean this -- that we're going to enjoy the win, but we've got a long way to go, especially on defense.
"I thought we played O.K. on offense at times. We hit some shots and got to the basket at will sometimes; but we sometimes settled for outside shots when we probably didn't have to. When we attack, good things seem to happen to us."
Tabor scored the first four points of the game before the Lady Conqs (6-1) went on a 17-point run and never lost its double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Guards Azaria Nave (17 points) and Kelli Tolar (11 points) pushed the charge as Dodge City led by as many as 21 points in the opening stanza and had a 51-33 cushion at halftime. The Lady Conqs were 8-of-13 from three-point range after 20 minutes of play.
"We were just faster and more athletic than they were," Nave said about their start. "We shouldn't have let them get two baskets to open the game."
However, the Lady Bluejays were able to grind down the margin, cutting the margin down to 68-57 midway through the second half and scored 44 points after intermission as they were able to find cracks in the Dodge City defense.
"I am not taking anything away from Tabor because they played hard, but we shouldn't give up 44 points in a half to that team," James said. "We are going to give up points because we are going to have more possessions than most teams in America; but if they had 77, then it should have been one of those games where we scored 130."
Tolar led the team in scoring with 27 points, while Nave added 22, Keiwanna Patterson 13 and Kesha Buckner 11. Dani Dowell led Tabor with 29 points, with Jesse Ramos scored 17 and Taylor Janzen 10 for the Lady Bluejays.
The Lady Conqs will return to action Tuesday night against the Lamar Lady Lopes in a chance to avenge their only loss so far this season. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. at United Wireless Arena.
