DODGE CITY
The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors earned a level of revenge Tuesday night as they ran around the Lamar Lady Running Lopes 108-94 in the women's game of a basketball doubleheader at United Wireless Arena.
Dodge City gave up 103 points in a loss at Lamar earlier in the season, the only setback they had suffered during their non-conference schedule; but they used a first half run to build a lead they would never relinquished to the Lady Lopes.
"The execution was there tonight," said Dodge City women's basketball head coach Mark James. "We played hard when we faced them up there, but our execution wasn't as good and we had some breakdowns. I couldn't be more proud of the effort and I don't we played bad defense tonight despite them scoring 94 points considering there were so many possessions."
Kelli Tolar scored 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point range, while Azaria Nave scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half and also had nine assists for Dodge City (7-1). Two other Lady Conqs recorded double-doubles in the game: Kesha Buckner with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Hannah Whitaker with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Dodge City shot 41-of-80 (51.3 percent) from the field for the game.
Ellie Stevens recorded a double-double for Lamar (3-2) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Other double figure scorers for the Lady Lopes include Ariel Rosa (16), Kanay Truitt (11), Vanessa Maestas (11), Gabriela Jimenez (10) and Celina Quayle (10).
The Lady Conqs were able to find way around the Lamar pressure defense in the first half with some pressure of their own. Dodge City led for most of the half, extending their lead to as much as 16 before intermission and led 50-39 at the break. Tolar scored 17 before halftime and Buckner 11 to lead the Lady Conqs, who shot 50 percent from the floor. Stevens scored nine to lead Lamar (16-of-52 after 20 minutes of play).
Tolar continued to be the main offensive threat for the Lady Conqs early in the second half, scoring 12 of Dodge City's 18 points five minutes into the second half to push the margin to 70-54.
The Lady Lopes were able to cut the margin to nine a couple of times later in the game, but Dodge City continued to score almost at will, reaching the century mark on a free throw by Buckner with 4:18 left in regulation.
The Lady Conqs will travel to Chanute for their next game to face Jayhawk East representaive Neosho County. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
