Lady Conqs in 12th after day one at Nationals

May 15, 2012

After the first day in Dayton Beach, the Dodge City Lady Conquistador golf team sits in 12th place at the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship with Monday's first round action wrapped up.
The Conqs, who qualified four of their golfers for the national invite last week in Hutchinson, went off in during the later tee times. According to head coach Ed Bethea, the team was wired with energy and nerves heading into their rounds on Monday afternoon.
"They were excited today, they were ready to play," he said. "But like I said before, just because it's a national tournament, they got nervous today. We need to play like it's just another golf tournament."
Freshman Jacie Scheer led the Conqs with a round of 86, while freshman Maurica Smith followed that up an 87 of her own. Rounding out the team scores for Dodge City were sophomore Krystal Martinez, who carded a 101, and freshman Amy Stegman, who finished with a 119.
"Conditions were great, the course is in great shape, and it was just an overall nice day today," Bethea said. "It's a long course, not very hilly, and there are some holes that are heavily tree-lined. It's a good challenge for the girls."
