Baseball Takes Care of Business and Dumps Cloud County

Mar 23, 2014
DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City baseball team pounded out 23 hits and scored 19 runs en route to a pair of wins, 8-1 and 11-1, over Cloud County Saturday afternoon in Jayhawk Conference action at Cavalier Field.

“We definitely needed to see a performance like this,” said DC3 coach Phil Stephenson, whose team entered on a five-game losing streak. “Our starting pitching was great and our offense did a really good job of attacking the ball.”

In game one of the doubleheader Sam Brunner (Ft. Collins, Colo. /Ft. Collins HS) did a great job keeping the Thunderbirds’ offense off kilter.

The 6-foot-5 righty tossed six innings and allowed one hit, no runs and one walk and struck out six batters.

“He did a great job for us,” Stephenson said. “He was in command the entire time and threw strikes.”

On offense, the Conqs did the majority of their damage with a five-run six inning.

The Conqs scored four of runs via wild pitches and errors, however, the highlight of the offensive spurt was an RBI double from Jerry Lacayo (Colorado Spring, Colo. /Cheyenne Mountain HS).

Trent Troxell (Ft. Cobb, Okla./Ft.Cobb-Broxton HS) finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, while Haden Houska (Enid, Okla./Enid HS), Conner Koepp (Norman, Okla./Norman HS) and Hayden Simmons (Wolfforth, Texas/Frenship HS) each contributed an RBI.

In game two of the twin bill, the Conqs didn’t waste any team placing points on the scoreboard

Parker Jones (The Colony, Texas/The Colony HS) 2 RBI single in the bottom of the first opened up an early 2-1 lead – a lead the Conqs wouldn’t relinquish.

DC3 added two runs in the second, four in the third, one in the fifth and two in the eighth – and the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Despite the offense, it was Andrew Riddell (Nsw, Australia/Oakhill College) that kept the Thunderbirds’ bats silent.

The 6-foot-6 Aussie tossed 7 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, two runs and one walk and struck out six.

Offensively, seven different players recorded an RBI.

Jordan Doan (Dodge City, Kan. /Dodge City HS) went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Damien Orr (Midwest City, Okla./Midwest City HS) finished with the unique distinction of not recording a hit, but logged a pair of sacrifice flies. Houska finished 2 for with 2 RBIs

The Conqs (17-11, 7-7 Jayhawk Conference) return to action Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Cloud County (5-16, 3-7 Jayhawk Conference).
