DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Dodge City baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Barton County, taking the opener 8-6 and dropping a 5-2 decision in the nightcap.
DC3 improved to 25-15 overall and 13-11 in Region VI and Jayhawk Conference standings.
In game one Jerry Lacayo (Colorado Springs, Colo. /Cheyanne Mountain HS) was the hero. The 5-foot-10 catcher drilled a 2-run walk-off home run to left field in the eighth inning to secure the win.
“He definitely came up big for us,” DC3 coach Phil Stephenson said. “It’s nice to get the win, but we really shouldn’t have out ourselves in that type of position to win the game.”
What Stephenson is referencing to is letting a 5-1 lead slip away in the seventh inning. The Conqs allowed five runs and were down to their final three outs in the seventh before Jordan Doan (Dodge City, Kan. /Dodge City HS) tied the game with an RBI single to force extras.
“We played well the majority of the game, but when you make a couple minor mistakes in a row then it can hurt you,” Stephenson said.
Trent Troxell (Ft. Cobb, Okla. /Ft. Cobb/Broxton HS) and Lacayo each brought in a pair of runs. Conner Koepp (Norman, Okla. /Norman HS), Parker Jones (The Colony, Texas/The Colony HS) and Jacob Bellamy (Anadarko, Okla. /Anadarko HS) each recorded an RBI.
In game two Troxell put DC3 up in the first inning with an RBI double. However, Barton (22-17, 9-11 Region VI and Jayhawk Conference) pushed across five runs in the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 win.
Jagger Harjo (Midwest City, Okla. /Midwest City HS) absorbed the loss. He tossed five innings and allowed five hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks and struck out three batters.
