Conqs Win Region Title

Gothenburg, NE (4/27/10) - The Conquistador men's golf team captured the 2010 Region VI title at the Wild Horse Golf Club.  After windy conditions made the course unplayable on Monday, all 36 holes were then played on Tuesday.  The Conqs then proceeded to shoot two of their best rounds of the season.  The Conqs team total of 597 (299/298) was enough to defeat KJCCC champion,  Hutchinson, by two strokes and give the Conqs the Region title. 

The Conqs were led by KJCCC champion Chien Hau Tan, who shot an even par 142 to tie for 1st place.  Tan then knocked off Iowa Western's Kevin Stanek on the 1st playoff hole to claim the District III title and Region VI title.  With the victory,  Chien Hau Tan has now won six tournaments this season and it was the fourth consecutive tournament that he has won this spring. Other Dodge City tema scores include : T 17 Ross Milne 78 73 151; T 19 Brett Patterson 76 76 152; T 19 Austin Maxwell 75 77 152; T 41 Trent Specht 80 80 160. Two Conq golfers also participated in the tournament as individuals,  T 11 Tannin Cash 74 75 149; 49 Jacob Hughes 88 81 169.

The tournament also served as a district qualifier for the NJCAA Division I National Championships and include teams from outside of the region.  The Conqs finished 3rd in the standings behind #10 Indian Hills and #13 Iowa Western, who shot 582 and 583 respectively. With the 3rd place finish, the Conqs have now qualified for the national tournament for the 20th year in a row.  Other Kansas teams qualifying for the National championships include Hutchinson CC and Kansas City (KS) CC which finished 5th. 

The Conqs now turn their attention to the 2010 NJCAA D-1 National Championship and improving on a 19th place finish from a year ago.  The tournament will be held May 18th-21st at Hampton Cove GC in Huntsville, Alabama
