2004-2005
Season Preview
Women’s Basketball at Dodge City Community College finally
has some stability in the program and the results have been great. Coach Jim
Turgeon enters his 5th season as head coach of DCCC Women’s Basketball Program.
The Lady Conqs are coming off a record setting season. Last years team broke a
school record for wins with 26. They also got off to the best start in school
history with a 15-0 record and were rated as high as #8 by the NJCAA national
poll. The Lady Conqs where one win away from going to the national tournament,
finishing as the Region IV Runner-up. By the looks of things this could be
another great year. “I’m very excited about this group this year because we have
worked very hard to bring in the type of girl’s it takes to be successful at
this level”, said Coach Turgeon. “If we can stay injury free and have good team
chemistry we can accomplish a lot this season.
Those returning to DCCC for their sophomore year will include
6’0” starting forward Elizabeth Fieser, 5’9” starting point guard Lisa Carrol,
and local product from Spearville, KS 5’8” reserve guard Jenna Nau. “I’m
expecting big things from these girls”! “They have been though it before and I
think it’s important to them to have a great year”, said Coach Turgeon. The team
will be getting added experience from two sophomore transfers. Transferring from
NCAA Division II power house Washburn University is 5’9” guard Anna Nimz.
Transferring from NJCAA Division II Clair County Community college is 5’8” guard
Taleesha Hardy. Taleesha averaged over 22 points a game last year were she was
the NJCAA D II second leading scorer in the nation last year. With ten other new
recruits that the coaches signed will push the returnees for playing time and
had depth to the team. Turgeon went on to say, “The new players on the team are
very talented but for us to be successful this year our team chemistry must be
good”.
With the new additions of talented players Coach Turgeon
plans on playing a lot of pressure defense. Coach Turgeon says, “I hope we will
be able to press and change defenses often during the course of the game.
Offensively, we like to get the ball down the floor quickly for easy baskets. I
think we will have the numbers and athletic players to do these things. However,
if we are not capable of playing that style of ball, I’m flexible and will play
a style that gives us the best chance to be successful.
Expectations are running high both on and off the court. “Our
team theme is play hard, play smart, play together... off the court you can
expect this program’s student athletes to go to class everyday and leave DCCC
with a degree”.
