ranked Cougars

The Dodge City Conquistadors women’s basketball team picked a
bad time to come up with one of its worst performances of the year.
The No. 6-nationally ranked Barton County Cougars dominated every aspect of
their game with the Conqs and picked up an 80-57 road win in Jayhawk West action
Wednesday night at the Civic Center.
The Conqs offense sputtered with their shots (19-of-44) and with the ability to
take care of the basketball (29 turnovers). Dodge City’s shooting woes included
their touch at the foul line (16-of-31).
Barton County scored 34 points off of DCCC turnovers, shot the ball 30 more
times than the Conqs in the contest and earned a 19-8 edge on the offensive
boards (which accounted for 16 more points for the Cougars).
And although the Cougars shot less than 50 percent from the field (31-of-74),
they were often able to find the open players despite the Conqs’ defense. The
visitors also hit all 12 of their free throw attempts.
Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars: Krishunna Hellen 15,
Stephanie N’Garsanet 12, Victoria Carlile 11 and ChrisDell Harris 10.
The Conqs frustrated Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon enough with the way they
played that he didn’t have any comments after the game.
The Dodge City players looked intimidated of the Cougars at the start of the
contest as Barton County opened up with a nine-point run: including four points
off second-chance shots, a wide-open three-pointer and a lay-up off of a steal.
"It’s OK if we get beat by them, but don’t just give them the game," Turgeon
said to his team during a timeout after the Cougars’ initial run.
The talk seemed to help for a little bit as Dodge City was able to cut the
margin to five, but the Cougars (19-1, 6-0) regained the momentum and slowly
built the lead up to 44-29 at halftime. The Conqs turned the ball over 16 times
in the first 20 minutes, with Barton County scoring 17 points off of the
miscues.
The Conqs’ lethargic play continued in the second half as Barton County was able
to extend the lead to as much as 32 points on the way to the rout.
Seda Erdogan scored 13 points to lead Dodge City, while Aroha Jennings added 12
and Patrice McKenzie 10 in the loss.
The Conqs will play its third home game in a week when they host Colby in
another Jayhawk West women’s battle at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Civic Center.
