The Dodge City Conquistadors had to take care of the ball on
the road in their Jayhawk West women’s matchup against No. 11 Cloud County in
Concordia’s “Bird Cage.” Instead, the Conqs played one of their worst games of
the season when it comes to keeping control of the ball as they lost 88-65 to
the Thunderbirds.
The Conqs (18-7, 6-5 Jayhawk West) turned the ball over 24 times in the game and
the 11th-ranked Thunderbirds capitalized with 38 points off of turnovers on the
way to recording their 10th division win.
“We’ve had a problem lately of turning the ball over than our opponents and
giving our opponents too many offensive rebounds compared to our offensive
rebounds,” said Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon. “Teams are shooting 20 more
times a game than we are and tonight was just another case of that.
“We shot 49 times to their 70 and you’re not going to win very many games,
especially if you give a good team like Cloud that type of advantage.”
The loss might have showed Turgeon that the Conqs still have a lot of work to do
in continuing to try to overcome the loss of Seda Erdogan.
“We’ve have to figure out a way to play on the road against good teams like
Cloud without her,” Turgeon said. “I knew it was going to be tough because it
was our first road game without her, and on top of that, it’s one of the top
teams in the conference.”
Sophomore post player Aroha Jennings scored 22 points, while freshman post
Chanelle Freeman recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
Post Kina Miller scored 29 points (13-of-19 from the field) and grabbed 12
rebounds to lead Cloud County (23-3, 10-2). Ashley Calvin added 15 points
(4-of-6 from three-point range), and Jordan Moylan scored 12 in the win.
The Conqs opened up the game with a six-point run before Cloud County scored 11
of the next 13 point to take the lead.
Dodge City was able to stay within 24-20 with 7:45 left in the half before the
T-Birds’ defense clamped down. The Conqs closed out the half with only one field
goal in six tries and turned the ball over six times as Cloud County used a 19-3
run just before halftime. A three-point basket by Snell cut the deficit to 42-26
at intermission.
“We were really bad offensively in the first half,” Turgeon said. “Not only did
we turn the ball over too much, we didn’t execute our stuff very well at all.
For the half, the Conqs were 11-of-26 from the field in the first half, but
committed 14 turnovers that Cloud County turned into 22 points. Miller scored 16
points and grabbed eight boards before intermission, while Calvin added nine for
the T-Birds.
Cloud County led by as much as 23 points early in the second half before a
nine-point run cut the Dodge City margin to 52-38. The margin stayed between 14
and 18 before a late T-Birds run pushed the lead back up to as much as 27 in the
final two minutes of the game.
The Conqs will travel Saturday to El Dorado for another Jayhawk West road
contest against the Butler Grizzlies. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
