The Dodge City Conquistadors women’s basketball team let another
chance for victory in a close game slip through their fingers in a 62-61 loss to
the Colby Trojans in a Jayhawk West matchup at the Civic Center.
It was the third conference loss for the Conquistadors in four games at the
Civic Center this season.
The Conqs turned the ball over three times in the last 90 seconds as the veteran
Trojans were able to pull away and got the points when it counted to remain in
second place in the division standings.
"To me, the whole difference in the game was that they have a whole veteran team
who have been through these battles for a year and a half, and we don’t because
we’re not tough enough," said Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon.
"What I mean by not tough enough is that we need to fight through adversity and
execute our stuff or make plays when it counts. Right now, we’re not there yet."
It looked like the Conqs (14-6, 3-4 Jayhawk West) were going to be in for
another rough ride as Colby made eight of its first 11 shots to build a 17-8
lead. Dodge City was able to cut the deficit to five but the Trojans still had
the hot hand and led 25-17 with nine minutes left.
The Conqs then clamped down on defense to score the last 15 points of the half
to build a 32-25 halftime lead. Colby missed its last 17 shots of the half,
while Dodge City was 7-of-12 on the run.
"I’m happy with the effort and our comeback, but we still have to make the plays
when it counts," Turgeon said.
Colby (18-3, 6-1) hit four of its first shots after intermission to take an
early second half lead, before the two teams traded the lead for the next 10
minutes. The Trojans took the lead for good at 47-43 on two baskets by Suzana
Sormaz. Sormaz scored 17 of her 22 points after halftime.
The Conqs got as close as 56-55 on a basket by Aroha Jennings with 1:38
remaining in regulation before the Trojans forced Dodge City into making
mistakes to close out the win.
Seda Erdogan led the Conqs with 22 points and six assists, while Jennings and
Beth Troutt added 13 apiece.
Jamie Schroeder added 17 in the win for Colby. The Trojans’ leading scorer Rita
Kola only scored six points on 3-of-19 from the field; but Kola led Colby in
rebounds (16) and assists (seven).
Dodge City will close out its first half schedule with a road game at 6 p.m.
Wednesday against the Hutchinson Blue Dragons.
