Colby women win West as
Conquistadors’ offense stalls
By John Curtis www.dodgeglobe.com
The Dodge City Conquistadors felt they had a chance to spoil
"Sophomore night" for the Colby Trojans despite not having night on offense.
But after cutting a deficit down to eight midway through the second half, the
Trojans’ offense came alive and pulled away from Dodge City with a 70-57
victory. The win clinched the Jayhawk West standings and a No. 1 seed in the
Region VI tournament for Colby.
"We feel we let one get away from us when we had a chance," said Dodge City head
coach Jim Turgeon. "It’s not very often that you get a team as good as Colby on
their home court on ‘Sophomore night’ not play particularly well and have a
chance to beat them."
Despite shooting 45.1 percent from the field in the game, the Conqs (19-9, 7-7
Jayhawk West) didn’t execute its offense very well. Dodge City scored only 33
points in the first 30 minutes of the game before Colby (25-3, 13-1) made their
final run to clinch the division title.
"We really weren’t executing our offense very good in the first half," Turgeon
said. "We were fortunate that Beth (Troutt) hit some big shots for us and
Chanelle (Freeman) got us some good offensive rebounds to keep us in the game."
Troutt led the Conqs with 19 points (only four in the second half), while
Freeman scored 12 and grabbed 14 rebounds for another double-double. Aroha
Jennings also scored 12 in the loss, while Patrice McKenzie scored 10.
Suzana Sormaz scored 30 points Q including 8-of-12 from three-point range Q to
lead the Trojans, while Rita Kollo added 16 in the win.
With the loss, the Conqs will have the No. 5 seed and will play their first
region tournament game on the road against an unknown Jayhawk East opponent.
"We just need to stay healthy and fresh and just prepare for the fact that we’re
going to be on the road," Turgeon said. "We’re going to approach the game at
Barton like a playoff game, so we’ll be used to playing with a playoff
atmosphere on the road."
