Conqs’ women finish season with five-point loss at Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY  The Dodge City Conquistadors women’s basketball team could never get over the hump in their Region VI women’s first round contest and ended their season with a 66-61 loss to Cowley College.
“Particularly in the second half, every time we had a chance to make a move, we’d either turn the ball over or miss a shot,” said Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon.

Freshman Chanelle Freeman led the Conqs (20-12) with 18 points and a school-record 27 rebounds, while sophomores Beth Troutt and Aroha Jennings scored 13 points apiece in their final game for Dodge City. Martina Gonzales added six in her final game.

Turgeon said that although the Conqs’ season is over, he was pleased with all the team accomplished despite all the distractions suffered this season.

“We’ve probably had more teams with better talent, but in all the teams I’ve coached, this year’s team came the closest to its full potential,” he said.
