Troutt’s three gives Conqs first Jayhawk win

By John Curtis www.dodgeglobe.com

GARDEN CITY- Sophomore shooting guard Beth Troutt hit a three-point basket with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to give the Dodge City Conquistadors a 60-59 road win over the Garden City Broncbusters in Jayhawk West women’s action Saturday night.
Troutt admitted during the time out to set up the game-winning shot that she thought about her miss of a potential game-tying three-pointer in Wednesday night’s home loss to Cloud County.

“I just put it up and I didn’t know if it was going in or not,” Troutt said. “I had been kind of off the whole game, but I knew that I was open and the time was running out, so I just shot it.

“(Missing the shot against Cloud County) was definitely on my mind during the time out. I was the second option and this was an opportunity to redeem myself, and I wanted to redeem myself.”

Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon was pleased that Troutt was able to bounce back after the Cloud County game.

“To have another opportunity to have the same situation in the very next game, she was able to come through,” Turgeon said. “I was very proud of her.”

The three-pointer completed a comeback as the Conqs were able to overcome a horrid shooting night to win their fifth straight win over the Busters (8-10, 1-3). Dodge City shot 31 percent from the field (21 percent in the first half).

“We got some open shots, but they just weren’t falling,” Turgeon said. “Then we started to take the ball inside, and that’s where we dominated.”

Turgeon said the Conqs’ defense and rebounding were the keys to winning the road game.

“They executed a lot of different plays, so it’s hard to prepare for them and all of the things they do,” Turgeon said. “We played good solid defense and (freshman point guard) Kezia (Snell) on defense.

“We (also) just beat them on the boards and that was the difference in the game.”

Freshman post Chanelle Freeman grabbed 13 rebounds to go along with her game-high 19 points for her second conference double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Snell grabbed 11 boards and sophomore post Aroha Jennings recorded 10 more off the glass.

Jennifer Salazar scored 13 points to lead Garden City in scoring. Other players to score in double figures for the Busters included Natasha Curtis with 11 and Renee Berry 10.
