Conq women record key road win
By John Curtis www.dodgeglobe.com
The Dodge City Conquistadors women’s basketball team has been
more effective when it’s able to use defense to put pressure on opponents.
The Conqs used that pressure Wednesday night in a 49-37 Jayhawk West victory
over the Hutchinson Blue Dragons in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Hutchinson shot 15-of-51 from the field P 1-of-12 from three-point range P and
turned the ball over to the Conqs 21 times as Dodge City evened its conference
record to 4-4 and overall record to 16-6.
“They tried to slow the ball down and use all of the shot clock,” said Dodge
City head coach Jim Turgeon. “Our defense was good, and what we rebounded a lot
better in the second half. We got whipped on the boards in the first half.”
The Dragons’ leading scorer, Tessa Morrow, was guarded all night by either Seda
Erdogan or Kezia Snell. The two forced Morrow to shoot 3-of-10 from the field
and eight total points (six below her average).
The Conqs didn’t shoot much better from the field in the game (17-of-49), but
were more efficient in three-point shooting (8-of-17).
Aroha Jennings led the Conqs in scoring with 14 points, while Chanelle Freeman
and Patrice McKenzie added eight apiece.
Carol Valpato led Hutchinson (14-8, 2-6) with 17 points.
Now with half of the conference season over, Turgeon hopes the Conqs can show
maturity now as they go through the other division teams for the second time
this season.
“Our conference is really good and we lost three games by a total of seven
points, so we very could easily be 7-1,” Turgeon said. “We lost those close
games to teams that have sophomore leadership that has been through this before.
“I hope our second time through the conference season, our freshmen will turn
into sophomores and our sophomores who didn’t play that often have a better feel
for what’s going on. I expect to get better the second time through.”
The Conqs play Seward County at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Civic Center.
