Jennings scores 39 in Conqs’ road win

By John Curtis www.dodgeglobe.com

Sophomore post player Aroha Jennings felt relaxed Wednesday night before the start of Dodge City’s Jayhawk West matchup against the Pratt Beavers in the Beaver Dome.
Jennings responded with 39 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Conquistadors to an 89-68 victory over the Beavers to even Dodge City’s division record to 2-2.

The sophomore from New Zealand was 13-of-15 from the field P Jennings’ only two misses from the field were on three-point shots P and made 10-of-11 from the free throw line.

“I just had to do what I had to do,” Jennings said. “I had to be strong in the posts and took what my defenders gave me and my shot tended to fall.”

Jennings wasn’t the only player who had a good night offensively for the Conqs, who are now 14-4 overall on the season.

Sophomore guard Beth Troutt added 15 points and eight rebounds, sophomore guard Seda Ergodan had 13 points and eight assists, and freshman post Chanelle Freeman scored 12 points and grabbed 11 boards.

The Conqs as a team shot 56.4 percent as a team P including 60.7 percent from the field in the first half on the way to a 46-29 halftime lead.

Dodge City out rebounded Pratt 49-33, and although 68 points to the Beavers is more than their points per game allowed average, the Conqs’ defense was able to adjust to mismatches they had to endure against the Pratt offense of four guards and one post player.

“We are getting more prepared and I think our team worked really well tonight as a team,” Jennings said. “We were all there for each other and our coaches taught us well. We were ready for Pratt tonight.”

Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon said he thought the victory over Pratt was the Conqs’ most complete game of the season.

“We’ve had games where we played well on defense, but struggled on offense; then have a good game on offense, but couldn’t guard anybody,” Turgeon said. “We executed so much better on our transition offense and we were able to get some easy baskets;

Viola Beybeyah led Pratt (11-8, 1-4) with 16 points, while Bonnie Freestone added 13 and Lindsey Davis 12 in the loss.

The Conqs will play the first of three straight home games Sunday at the Civic Center against Butler County. Tipoff will be at 3 p.m.
