Freeman block seals win for Conqs
By John Curtis www.dodgeglobe.com
It was almost deja vu for the Dodge City Conquistadors in
their Jayhawk West basketball game against the Seward County Saints Sunday
afternoon at the Civic Center.
But all it took was the flick of an arm by freshman post player Chanelle Freeman
to keep the Conqs from having to endure the same result in a 64-57 victory over
the Saints to open the second half of the season.
The block Freeman had was her sixth of the half and seventh of the game. She
swatted a three-point attempt by the Saints' Sierra Radke with 16 seconds left
and then grabbed the ball out of the air.
"I'm happy. I feel great," Freeman said. "The coaches said we had to guard the
shooters and they set a pick on (DCCC guard) Kezia (Snell), and I was guessing (Radke)
was going to shoot it, so I just went for it."
Freeman's block saved the win for the Conqs (17-6, 5-4 Jayhawk West), who had
suffered a loss in the first meeting between the teams by allowing Seward County
to close out the game with a nine-point run in the final three minutes.
This time, the Saints (19-4, 5-4) had cut an eight-point lead down to three in
20 seconds and had already missed two chances to tie the game before Freeman's
defensive play. The Conqs clinched the win with three free throws after Radke
was called for an intentional foul and a technical foul assessed to the Saints'
bench.
"It was definitely on our minds that we let one get away at their place," said
sophomore guard Beth Troutt. "They are a really good team, but we deserved to
win the last time, so it was definitely on our minds to win this one."
Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon was pleased to see his team make the plays to
record the win in a close game.
"It feels really good (to win) because we didn't have things go our way in the
last 50 seconds of the game," Turgeon said. "We were still able to compete our
composure and finish the game.
Sophomore guard Seda Erdogan led the Conqs with 15 points and five assists,
while Troutt added 13 points and six rebounds. But Turgeon said the statistics
showed that the win was definitely a complete team win.
Sophomore post Aroha Jennings scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half,
Freeman had 16 rebounds to go with her seven blocks, and freshman post Patrice
McKenzie had 13 rebounds and led the team in assists with seven.
"The reason why they got open looks was because our post players were very
active," Turgeon said. "Our post players might not have scored very much, but
they were getting touches inside and (Seward) had to respect that, and that
opened up things for Seda and Beth."
Taushelle Rushing led Seward County in scoring with 15 points, while Ilda Chambe
had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints.
