Conqs women improve to 2-0 with win
weekend victories.
The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team opened up the 2005-06
campaign Friday afternoon with a 71-52 victory over Howard College (Texas) in
the first day of the Seward County Pepsi Classic in Liberal.
"It wasn't our best game of the season, but you don't want to have your best
game on Nov. 4," said Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon. "I was pleased with the
way we played.
"We played strong defensively in the
game and also did well rebounding the ball. Our offense lagged behind in the
first half, but we were able to adjust to things in the second half and played
much better."
Sophomore guard Beth Troutt led the
Conqs in scoring with 25 points (including 3-of-6 from three-point range), while
sophomore post Aroha Jennings added 19 points and six rebounds, and freshman
post Channell Freeman scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards.
On Saturday afternoon the Conqs
played Jefferson County (Mo.) and picked up a 66-61 victory to conclude the
weekend's classic.
Sophomore Aroha Jennings scored 22 points and grabbed 12 boards to lead the
Conqs. Patrice McKenzie added 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win,
while Channell Freeman scored 10 and recorded eight boards.
“We dominated inside for the most part,” said Dodge City head coach Jim Turgeon.
“Midway through the first half, we started to dominate the post play, and I
think that was the key to the game.”
Turgeon said the Conqs (2-0) didn’t play well at all, but the team should be
pretty good by January, when the Jayhawk West season starts.
The Conqs travel to Sterling today for a battle against the Warriors women’s
junior varsity team. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
