The
2010-2011 season will mark Steve High’s 4th year as
head women’s basketball coach at Dodge City Community College
and 36th year in the coaching profession. Prior to
his arrival in Dodge City, Coach High spent 18-years at the helm
of the Gorilla Women’s Basketball program at Pittsburg State
University in Pittsburg, KS. High was the winningest coach in
the 33-year history of the program, compiling 299 victories.
Coach High fashioned the Gorillas into perennial contenders,
winning two MIAA championships, and earning five NCAA Division
II National Tournament berths. The MIAA is widely considered to
be one of the top women’s basketball conferences in the nation.
During High’s 18-year tenure at PSU, all but two of his
student-athletes that completed their eligibility graduated and
the team’s academic grade point average during that same time
was 3.377.
Prior to coaching at Pittsburg State
University Coach High was an assistant coach at the University
of Nebraska from 1986-1989. While High was at Nebraska, the Lady
Huskers went from seventh in the Big Eight to winning its first
and only conference title in 1987, and a first-ever berth in the
NCAA Division I National Tournament and backed it up with
another trip to the NCAA’s in 1988. Before serving as an
assistant coach at Nebraska, Coach High was the girls’
basketball coach at Linn-Mar High School in Marion, IA for four
seasons. He posted a 67-25 overall record at LMHS, leading the
Lady Lions to Iowa’s first-ever five-on-five girls’ basketball
state title. High was named Metro Coach of the Year in 1984 and
1985 and was conference and state coach of the year in 1985.
Coach High earned a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Physical Education and Health from the University of
Northern Iowa in 1974. High and his wife of 36 years, Anne, who
is an out-patient addictions counselor at New Chance, Inc. in
Dodge City, have a daughter Morgan, and a son Taylor. Morgan
competed four years in track and field at Kansas State
University and was a Big XII High Jump Champion, earned indoor
and outdoor All-American honors. She earned a Bachelor of
Science degree from KSU and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
from Pittsburg State University in 2008. Morgan and her husband,
David Lemen, have a five-year-old daughter and a newborn son and
reside in Oregon City, OR. Taylor is a 2008 graduate of the
University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport
Science with an emphasis in Sports and Fitness Management and is
the assistant women’s basketball coach at DCCC.
The High’s reside in Dodge City.

Taylor High enters
his third year as the assistant women’s basketball coach at
Dodge City Community College. Coach High graduated in May of
2008 from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science in
Sport Science with an emphasis in Sports and Fitness Management.
While attending KU,
Taylor worked for four years as a student manager and his senior
year as head manager for Coach Bill Self’s Kansas men’s
basketball program. During his time on the staff the Jayhawks
captured four Big XII regular season championships, three
consecutive Big XII post-season tournament titles, and the 2008
NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship.
As the head manager
for KU men’s basketball Coach High’s responsibilities included
the management of a student support staff of nine; including
scheduling, hiring, training, and team building for games,
travel, and practice. Also assisting the coaching staff in the
organizing and participating in the execution of practice
drills, preparation of team scouting reports and the production
of edit tapes, video exchange, and film breakdowns. Aided the
staff with on-campus recruiting which included the scheduling of
campus tours, facilities tours, and highlight video
presentations. Coach High assisted with individual workouts for
Jayhawk players preparing for the National Basketball
Association draft and helping to organize and administer the
Bill Self Holiday Clinic and Coaches Clinic.
Coach
High’s responsibilities with the Lady Conq program include
monitoring team academics, aiding student-athletes with class
scheduling and financial aid, coordinating prospective
student-athlete recruitment, scouting of opponents, production
of game and opponent video edits, and on-court coaching of the
guards. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball
Coaches.
As a high school
player Coach High was an all-conference and all-state basketball
selection and all-state track and field competitor, a member of
the National Honor Society, as well as a senior class
valedictorian. Taylor is the son of Lady Conq Head Coach Steve
High and his wife Anne and he resides in Dodge City. |
